🤡 Reclass to Make the Academy Team? That’s the Newest Joke in Youth Soccer

By Anees Merzi | October 2025
Youth soccer parent laughs at reclassing advice

A dad told us his club (not to be mentioned) said the quiet part out loud:

“If your son wants to make the academy team next year, he should reclass and repeat 6th grade.”

No lie. The dad laughed as he told us. We did too. But, it’s not that funny when you realize this pressure is widespread and it’s growing as the system changes back to school year and away from birth year.

📅 The Backstory: Youth Soccer Is Switching Calendars Again

National orgs like U.S. Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO are moving away from the birthyear format and switching to a school-year model (August-July) starting 2026–27.

This change is meant to help kids stay with their school-grade peers. But instead, some clubs are twisting it into an opportunity to build stronger, older teams.

That’s how a 12-year-old ends up being told: “Stay back in 6th grade so you can help our roster look better.”

⚠️ Let’s Be Clear: This Isn’t About the Kids

When a club encourages a family to reclass:

It’s soccer as a marketing tool, not a developmental journey.

📣 What National Orgs Actually Want

This change was designed to:

When clubs push kids to reclass for advantage, they’re going against the entire point of the switch.

🥴 Why It’s a Red Flag

If a club’s strategy requires manipulating birth certificates, ask:

Kids lose. Clubs don’t care as they’ll just recruit the next one willing to pay to play.

🙅🏽‍♂️ What We Told That Dad

Stay with your grade. Trust your instincts. Find a team that sees your kid’s growth and not just a prop for their clubs success.

We’re proud he walked away from that advice and decided to keep his son with his real peer group. That’s the win!
